July 22, 2026 -- The suspect in a road rage shooting in Santa Monica on July 3 was arrested Tuesday after a televised high-speed chase on two major freeways that reached speeds of up to 100 mph.
SMPD investigators located the suspect -- who had fled the scene of the road rage shooting near Cloverfield Boulevard and Broadway on foot -- in the San Fernando Valley Tuesday morning, police said.
When officers on Tuesday attempted to make contact, the suspect fled in a Range Rover, triggering a pursuit led by the California Highway Patrol that began at the interchange between the 405 and 118 freeways in the San Fernando Valley, television footage shows.
The chase -- which continued on the 101 Freeway through Hollywood and Koreatown -- ended shortly before 8 a.m., when the Range Rover crashed attempting to scale the center median on Paramount Boulevard north of the 60 Freeway in Montebello.
Video aired by KTLA-5 showed CHP officers box in the suspect’s SUV, remove him from the vehicle and take him into custody. The footage shows the suspect, who has not been identified, sitting on a curb near his vehicle in handcuffs.
“CHP units assumed primary responsibility for the pursuit, with SMPD personnel assisting,” said Lt. Lewis Gilmour, the Police Department spokesman.
“This remains an active and ongoing investigation. Additional information, including any arrest or charging information, will be released when appropriate.”
The road rage incident -- in which the suspect fired a shot into another vehicle -- took place during increase police activity over the fourth of July week, which saw 2,426 calls for service and 98 arrests.
"The activity was marked by several significant arrests involving firearms, narcotics, robbery, and burglary," police officials wrote in The Blue Notebook covering the week from June 28 to July 4.
In one arrest, officers "responding to a disturbance involving a vehicle contacted a convicted felon and recovered a firearm from his waistband.
"Ammunition, fentanyl, oxycodone pills, suspected cocaine, marijuana, scales, and packaging materials were also located," officials said, adding that the subject was arrested on multiple firearms and narcotics charges.
