May 29, 2024 -- Santa Monica State Beach has been named one of California's top 10 spots for "beach bliss" by USA TODAY, according to the paper's 2024 Readers’ Choice Awards posted Wednesday.

The beach was ranked sixth by readers who voted on top picks nominated by travel experts and was the only LA County beach to make the top 10, according to the popular site.

"Santa Monica State Beach is home to a vibrant seaside lifestyle, with its wide stretches of soft sand, top-notch waves, iconic pier, and bustling boardwalk, making it a fantastic destination for locals as well as tourists," the site wrote.

"Visitors have access to convenient facilities and there's many available activities, including biking and skating along the scenic beach path, taking a dip in the Pacific, and lounging under an umbrella -- all while soaking in those SoCal vibes."

Being selected from among more than 400 California beaches is "a true honor," said Misti Kerns, President/CEO of Santa Monica Travel & Tourism (SMTT).

“Even more special is that USA TODAY readers made the final selections" Kerns said. “Santa Monica State Beach is truly the treasure of our destination.

"And it is a privilege to welcome visitors and locals to take in the most beautiful sunsets, enjoy a dip in the Pacific and make lifelong memories on our shores.”

Santa Monica's 3.5-mile stretch of sand is home to the Pier and "friendly gathering spots like the Annenberg Community Beach House" and is "the birthplace of the beloved sport of beach volleyball," SMTT officials said.

It also features a scenic stretch of the 22-mile Marvin Braude Bike Trail and is "walking distance to the city’s world-class hotel properties, restaurants and attractions," tourism officials said.

The top beach in California was 'Olol'koy Beach Park in Oxnard, followed by Pismo Beach, Harbor Beach in Oceanside, Huntington State Beach and Coronado Beach.
