May 24, 2024 -- Memorial Day weekend in Santa Monica promises to be cool and sunny, drawing holiday crowds to the beach and Downtown, as police ramp up patrols across the city.
The Police Department will station its Mobile Command Post near the beach or the 3rd Street Promenade and mounted units will be out on patrol on Main Street and near Palisades Park.
The enhanced patrols "aim to increase visibility and public safety amid the festivities" and "ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for residents and visitors alike," Police officials said.
Safety tips for the weekend include keeping personal belongings secure and in sight and locking vehicles and securing homes, especially when away.
Police also advise the public to "stay aware of your surroundings and report any suspicious activity."
SMPD motor officers will be conducting safety-focused operations throughout the weekend targeting motorists driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs that pose "a significant threat to everyone on the road."
"We strongly encourage everyone to plan ahead by designating a sober driver or arranging alternative transportation such as rideshare services," police officials said.
"Let's work together to prevent tragedies and make this holiday a safe one for all," officials said.
"As we kick off the summer season, our priority is the safety and well-being of everyone in Santa Monica."
For emergencies, dial 911. For non-emergencies, contact SMPD's dispatch center at 310-458-8491.
