September 5, 2023 -- Samohi closed down on Tuesday after a major blown fuse triggered a power outage, District officials announced Monday night.
District employees and a high voltage electrical contractor worked since Saturday morning to repair the wiring and replace the fuse, officials said.
Southern California Edison is scheduled to inspect, approve and restart the power by late Tuesday morning, Superintendent Antonio Shelton wrote in an email to parents, students and staff.
"Electrical systems at the campus will need to be restarted following their process, including air conditioning, ventilation and technology, which is expected to take about one hour," Shelton said.
The school closure includes the Infant Toddler Center (ITC) on the Samohi campus, he said. Project-based learning pathway students will have school on the SMC campus.
"It is unfortunate that this situation has a snowball effect requiring the loss of a school day," Shelton said.
"However, we are unable to have school without lighting, including in restrooms, heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), no phones, other electrical needs, and no use of the kitchen to provide food services for students."
Samohi and ITC are expected to resume on a normal schedule, Shelton said.
