April 12, 2019 -- It takes Santa Monica police an average of 4 minutes and 37 seconds to respond to a call for service, and 39 percent of the city's seniors have a library card.

These are some of the statistics that can be found on Santa Monica's new online dashboard launched this week to help residents gauge the progress the City is making toward meeting its goals.

“We want residents to know our citywide priorities and how we’re delivering on our commitment to being a sustainable city of wellbeing,” said Mayor Gleam Davis.

The “Citywide Dashboard” makes it easy to explore topics of interest and find ways to become involved, Davis said.

Based on the Framework for a Sustainable City of Wellbeing, the City’s strategic visioning document, the dashboard contains more than 40 metrics that define success, officials said.

The document poses questions for each of the key outcomes -- community, economic opportunity, health, learning, place and planet, and governance.

"Each of these outcomes is organized into work streams with specific definitions and metrics designed to show whether or not investments are working," City officials said.

For example, the question asked for safety is: "Do people feel safe in Santa Monica?"

To help answer the question, the dashboard offers data that includes the percentage of road injuries, the number of crimes, the percentage of fires contained in the room of origin and survey results.

The metrics used to gauge "Reliable, Effective, and Efficient Government" include revenue diversity, the level of pension funding, employee retention rate and the percentage of views on the open data website.

The dashboard will be edited in the summer to reflect changes made in the City's final budget, officials said.
