Santa Monica West LL All-Stars are Champs

By Mitch Chortkoff

It's been a great run for Santa Monica West Little League All-Star Juniors, winners of the District 25 Tournament with an impressive array of offensive production.

Each victory in the tournament occurred via the mercy rule, where the game ends after five innings if a team leads by 10 runs.

Santa Monica defeated Beverly Hills, 34-0, in 4 1/2 innings as Justin Gordon-Cooper pitched the shutout. Nick Flannery started and Ryan Natale then finished in a 19-3 victory over North Venice.

Santa Monica West then lost to Santa Monica East, setting up another game between the teams for the district title. Santa Monica West then resumed its one-sided victory by winning, 14-4.

The district champions go on to Sectional play in Bellflower. In that tournament Santa Monica West won its first game with a 10-0 shutout of Manhattan Beach, the Division 36 winner. Spencer Knox pitched the victory.

The Santa Monica West roster: Edgar Aceves, Stuart Boardman, Cody Decker, Nick Flannery, Justin Gordon-Cooper, Ben Herald, Sam Howard, Spencer Knox, Ryan Natale, James Nedelman, Jamie Perez, Justin Phillips, Shawn Wild, Steve Xander.

The coaches are Scott Goldfarb, John Pohl and Steve Summers.

Many of these players made the All-Star team a year ago and even though the Santa Monica team didn't advance as far they gained valuable experience.
