Santa Monica's Miller Thrives On New Volleyball Tour

By Mitch Chortkoff

There's been a dramatic change in professional volleyball due to the return of Leonard Armato to the sport.

Armato, best known as Shaquille O'Neal's agent, has a volleyball background. He founded the the Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP) in the 1980s, left for other projects and came back when his Management Plus company of El Segundo acquired the AVP on May 31.

Armato's first move was to combine the mens and womens' tours, meaning the world's best players would be in the same city for their tournaments.

A player thriving in the new structure is Marsha Miller of Santa Monica, who ranks 21st on the womens' list of domestic money leaders.

Santa Monica has a proud tradition in the sport and has supplied many of the best players through the years.

Another player doing well is Misty May of Long Beach, who ranks 11th in earnings. She was a star at Long Beach State College. Before that she grew up in Santa Monica, where her father owned a restaurant on the pier.

Currently the womens' earnings leader is Barbara Fontana of Manhattan Beach. The mens' earnings leader is Dax Holdren of San Diego.

Two tournaments have been held since Armato took over. The first was in Hermosa Beach and the second in Huntington Beach. The next one will be in Muskegon, Mich. on the weekend of July 13-15.
