Santa Monica Sports Notes

The high school baseball season ended for local teams when Crossroads was eliminated from the CIF playoffs in the first round by Cerritos Valley Christian.

Crossroads advanced the furthest of the Santa Monica teams this season. Santa Monica and St. Monica both were in contention for playoff berths before losing games in the final week. There's a lot of promise for all three teams next season with promiment players returning to each one.

Pete Farina, the Samohi catcher last season, transferred to University High this season, where he caught All-City pitcher Ethan Katz. The Warriors had a good year, finishing second in the Western League before losing to top-ranked Chatsworth, 4-0, in the first round of the L.A. City Section playoffs.

The Crossroads softball team qualified for the CIF playoffs and won a first round game before being eliminated.

SMC Honors Its Best Athletes in 16 Sports

By Mitch Chortkoff

There's a wonderful tradition at Santa Monica College --- an annual breakfast to honor one athlete from each of the school's 16 athletic teams.

The event took place last week at the school's Madison Campus. It was sponsored by the SMC General Advisory Board, a community support group.

The parade of winners bring back memories of their accomplishments and of the many spirited competitions that took place during the last year.

In football, for instance, the presence of center Dine Hill made me think about the Corsairs' victory in the first US Bank Beach Bowl. It capped an outstanding season.

In basketball, Conrad Adamczak was a logical choice. He went from a reserve two seasons ago to a premier player on this season's team. The experience he gained as a substitutue helped him excel when he became a starter.

A list of the other winners:

Womens' Basketball: Crystal Conley; Womens' Swimming: Erika Halloran: Mens' Swimming: Eric Astorian. Womens' Track and Field: Danielle Hawkins: Mens' Track and Field: Garland Randall.

Womens' Volleyball: Cheyanne Price. Mens' Volleyball: Meletios Exadaktylos. Mens' Cross Country: Josh Garrett. Womens' Soccer: Melissa Jones. Womens' Cross Country: Isaura Rodrigues.

Womens' Softball: Karlynn Santos. Womens' Water Polo: Maria Elm. Mens' Water Polo: Michael Norumand: Womens Tennis: Denisa Karpaty.

Congratulations for a job well done.

The next major event at SMC will be graduation ceremonies for 700 students June 12 at Corsair Field.
