Basketball Stars Help St. Monica in Track

By Mitch Chortkoff

What happens to high school basketball stars when the season ends? At St. Monica they go out for track and help make the Mariners one of the league's best teams.

With the help of basketball players Sean Cole, Marcus Shelby, Jamayne Potts, Robert Rakestraw, Jock Owens and Phil Minter, Coach Randy Robinson is fielding a Camino Real League track contender this sesason.

``We've done well winning three league meets,'' said Robinson.``We're pleased with the direction of the program.''

Cole, who is 6-foot-6, runs the 100 and 200 meters and is a member of the Mariners' 4x400 relay team.

He was all-CIF first team in basketball and is being recruited by several Division 1 schools.

The 6-foot-7 Shelby already excelled in football and basketball before coming out for track. Potts, a guard on the basketball team, runs the 200 and 400. Owens and Potts are alternating on the 4x400 relay team.

Michael Dunn, a premier receiver on the football team as a freshman, is another key member of the track team. So is Tommy Irwin, a football star who was the league runnerup in the 100 last year.

The arrival of the basketball players gave the Mariners plenty of depth. Before they came out the team had several individual stars, including Anthony Mojica, who runs the 800, the mile and the 3200 meters.

The league powerhouse is Serra, a team that will present quite a challenge for St. Monica. The teams will meet April 26.

After that St. Monica will seek success in the Camino Real League championships, the CIF meet and the state meet.

The St. Monica girls team doesn't have much depth but has some outstanding athletes led by 400-meter star Tracy Curry and shotputter Jehanne Lowe, who started on the basketball team.
