Crossroads
Boys, Girls Lose in State Tournament
There were lofty goals at Crossroads School this basketball
season. Most of the goals were met.
The boys and girls teams both won their league and reached
the CIF finals before losing. Both teams then went to the state tournament,
won one game and were eliminated in the second.
The boys lost to Horozon High of San Diego last Thursday
at Mesa College, 69-60.
Before that they claimed a state tournament victory by going to
Cowchilla and winning easily.
The girls began their state tournament bid with an easy 59-30
victory at Taft. However, in the second round the girls went to La Jolla
and lost to The Bishop's School, 50-41.
The girls could only wonder what might have been if 6-foot-2 center
Michelle More had not sprained her left ankle in the playoffs.
More scored only four points in both state tournament games, far below
her average.
``I missed half my junior year with a sprained ankle,'' said More. ``I'll
always have to wear ankle braces. I did fine my senior year but someone
fell on the ankle.''
While More will go to Nevada Reno on a volleyball scholarship next season,
Coach George Quintero will count on Courtney Young to lead the team.
Young is only 15 but she's known nationally.
In one game this season she had double figures in four categories. Regularly
she has triple doubles (double figures in points, rebounds and either
assists or steals).
``Courtney has unlimited potential,'' Quintero said of the 5-foot-11
forward. ``She's tremendously talented and she's an unselfish player.''
Roper is also looking forward to next season. His 6-foot-10,
250-pound center Isaiah Fox will be back for his junior year. Star junior
Felipe Williams will also be back.
