Samohi at Home for Playoffs

By Mitch Chortkoff

Santa Monica High will be home Friday night against Workman High, the third place team from the Montview League, in the first round of the CIF Division 10 football playoffs. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at SMC's Corsair Field, the Vikings' regular home field.

It will be only the second home playoff game in 13 years for the Vikings, who won their first round game on the road last season but lost at home in the second round to eventual champion Paso Robles.

Samohi is the top-seeded team from the Ocean League. The Vikings tied North Torrance for the league championship but earned the top seed because they defeated North Torrance. Inglewood, the league's other powerhouse team, is the third-seeded Ocean League entrant and must travel to Atascadero for its first round contest. The Ocean League's fourth place team, South Torrance, was also awarded a berth.

The division champion is expected to be Santa Monica, North Torrance, Inglewood, Paso Robles or Temple City. But a team must win four games to claim the championship.

``There are really three parts to the season --- non-league games, league games and the playoffs,'' said Samohi coach Norm Lacy.

To give his team the best chance of winning in the playoffs Lacy has switched 285-pound Josh Smith from tight end to fullback, where he is the lead blocker for tailback Derrick Davis. In the first test at South Torrance last Friday Smith wiped out defenders and Davis gained a season high 266 yards in a 55-6 victory.

``Josh played fullback as a sophomore before I was here," said Lacy. ``He kept reminding me all season.''
