The Santa Monica College Music Department will
present an eclectic mix of concerts in December, including the
very popular SMC Concert Chorale's "Christmas Celebration."
The lineup is:
* Friday, Dec. 4 at 7:30 p.m.: SMC Jazz Vocal Ensemble, with director
Cindy Bourquin. The ensemble - winner of Downbeat magazine's Outstanding
College Performance Award in the Jazz Vocal Group category - will
perform both solo and group jazz repertoire. The Broad Stage,
SMC Performing Arts Center on Santa Monica Boulevard at 11th Street.
(Tickets are $10.)
* Saturday & Sunday, Dec. 5 & 6 at 7:30 p.m.: The annual
"Christmas Celebration," featuring the SMC Concert Chorale,
Chancel Choir of the Santa Monica First United Methodist Church,
and the Los Angeles Concert Orchestra. The joyful evening program
will include the beautiful "Gloria" by John Rutter and
the ever-popular "Carols, etc.," featuring Peter Graves
as guest narrator. First United Methodist Church, 11th Street
& Washington Avenue, Santa Monica. (Tickets are $20 general

* Sunday, Dec. 6 at 4 p.m.: SMC Wind Ensemble Concert, under
the baton of Kevin McKeown. This festive concert will be highlighted
by the featured performance of guest musical artists. Traditional
holiday music will also be performed. The Broad Stage, SMC Performing
Arts Center on Santa Monica Boulevard at 11th Street. (Tickets
are $10.)
* Thursday, Dec. 10 at 11:15 a.m.: SMC Percussion Ensemble,
under the direction of Matthew Altmire. Edye Second Space, SMC
Performing Arts Center on Santa Monica Boulevard at 11th Street.

* Saturday, Dec. 12 at 7:30 p.m.: SMC Orchestra, with conductor
James Martin. Concert includes Shostakovich's Symphony #1, Wagner's
"Siegfried Idyll," The Gypsy Baron Overture by Johann
Strauss, and Ostinati and Cadenzas for Chamber Orchestra by SMC
emeritus professor and composer Rule Beasley, who will be present.

* Friday, Dec. 18 at 8 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 19 at 2 & 8

under the direction of Terrin Adair and Gary Gray. Theatre Arts
Studio Stage, SMC main campus, 1900 Pico Blvd. (Tickets are $10)
* Saturday, Dec. 19 at 7:30 p.m.: SMC Opera Workshop Highlights,
under the direction of Gail Gordon. The Broad Stage, SMC Performing
Arts Center on Santa Monica Boulevard at 11th Street. (Tickets
