July 13, 2026 -- Next week's State of the City address -- which has traditionally been held in a hall filled with civic leaders and stakeholders -- will once again resemble a big block party.

The free community event will be held on Thursday, July 23, from 4 to 7 p.m. as "an open street celebration" that will take place on Main Street between Hollister Avenue and Ocean Park Boulevard.

"The annual event will highlight community achievements in 2026, including the expansion of full-service hours at the Santa Monica Public Library, and focus on what’s ahead for 2027 with Mayor Caroline Torosis," City officials said.

This year’s theme -- “Realignment to Renaissance” -- celebrates Santa Monica’s "ongoing renaissance and Realignment Plan successes related to activating public spaces, encouraging local commerce and leveraging the global spotlight," officials said.

The City is already cashing in on major events like the FIFA World Cup, which has drawn large crowds to the Promenade and Pier, and the Council has been approving contracts for events and activations surrounding Super Bowl XLI on February 4 and the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

“Building on last year’s reimagined event, this year’s State of the City is designed to showcase the very best of Santa Monica,” Mayor Torosis said.

“By bringing together city departments, local businesses and community partners, we’re creating an opportunity for residents and stakeholders to connect with resources while celebrating the progress we’ve made and helping shape the next chapter of Santa Monica’s renaissance.”

Last year's State of the City broke with tradition when Mayor Lana Negrete delivered a speech at Reed Park that resembled a pep talk on the City's resiliency more than a policy address.

Like the mayor's highly personal speech, the State of the City event was atypical, with residents joining City staff and partners, as well as civic and business leaders, for a tour of the "newly revived and reopened" Miles Playhouse.

There were also interactive city booths, activities, games and giveaways, as well as musical performances to help kick off the City's 150th birthday celebration.
