August 24, 2026 – A juvenile suspect was taken into custody Sunday night in connection with a shooting near the Pier ramp earlier in the evening, as police continue looking for additional suspects, SMPD officials said.

Officers responded to the shooting reported at approximately 7:49 p.m. and provided emergency medical aid before the victim was transported to a local hospital with injuries believed to be non-life-threatening, officials said.

"The preliminary investigation indicates that a male victim in his 20s was approached by a group of individuals and an altercation occurred during an attempted robbery," said Lt. Lewis Gilmour, the Police Department spokesman.

"During the altercation, one individual fired a weapon, striking the victim in the leg," he said.

A juvenile suspect was taken into custody, and investigators are working to determine his role in the attempted robbery and shooting, Gilmour said, adding that detectives are working to identify and locate the remaining individuals involved.

The shooting took place some 31 hours after a Santa Monica police officer shot and killed a man who allegedly charged officers with a knife in Palisades Park Saturday afternoon.
