MODE Expands Services After Milestone Month

By Lookout Staff

January 22, 2026 -- A big Blue Bus program that offers discounted rides to those over 65 or disabled is expanding its services after its most successful month since the coronavirus shutdown five years ago.

The Mobility On-Demand Every Day (MODE) program, which uses both sedan and wheelchair accessible vehicles, offered in collaboration with Lyft, provided more than 5,000 rides last October

"The growth reflects expanded outreach efforts, including educational workshops, on-site application assistance, and wellness events that reached hundreds of eligible residents," transportation officials said Wednesday.

The new program enhancements "are designed to make getting around Santa Monica easier and more flexible than ever for eligible residents" by extending service and Call Center hours and instating Sunday service.

Every year, more than 2,200 active MODE members take more than 41,000 trips "for grocery shopping, medical appointments, and social outings," officials said.

Members can book trips through the Lyft app or by calling the MODE Call Center. Regular fares are $1.50 per trip or $0.75 for eligible low-income riders.

“Affordable, accessible transportation is an invaluable resource enabling older adults and individuals with disabilities to connect more seamlessly to essential destinations," said Anuj Gupta, the City's director of Transportation

The essential destinations include "medical centers and cultural spaces," as well as visiting with family and friends, and enjoying Santa Monica's offerings.
