September 23, 2025 -- Santa Monica honored first responders who fought the devastating January wildfires and celebrated the city's aviation legacy during Douglas Day 2025 on Sunday.

Hosted by the Spirit of Santa Monica, the event held at Atlantic Aviation at the Airport recognized those who "battled the devastating wildfires, working around the clock to protect lives, homes, and neighborhoods," event organizers said.

Santa Monica Mayor Lana Negrete presented commendations to Cal Fire, the Santa Monica Fire Department, the Los Angeles County and City Fire Departments, and other agencies that played a vital role in firefighting and recovery efforts.

“The January wildfires tested the strength and resilience of our region in ways we will never forget," Negrete said. "Our firefighters and first responders stood on the front lines with unwavering courage.

“Douglas Day gives us the chance not only to honor their heroism, but also to celebrate Santa Monica’s enduring spirit of innovation, community, and perseverance.”

The Palisades Fire northwest of the Santa Monica border destroyed 6,831 structures, including 5,058 single-family homes and 101 commercial buildings, according to a report by the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation.

The Eaton Fire destroyed 9,413 structures, including 6,003 single-family homes and 98 commercial buildings.

“Douglas Day is a reminder that resilience takes many forms, from those who take flight to those who protect our community on the ground," said Santa Monica Fire Chief Matthew Hallock.

“The men and women of the Santa Monica Fire Department were proud to serve alongside our partner agencies during the January wildfires,” Hallock said. "We are humbled to be recognized on this day of history and community pride.”

Douglas Day also honored Santa Monica’s historic role in aviation and aerospace with aircraft displays of "vintage planes and future mobility innovations," organizers said.

The displays included STEAM-powered discovery zones with hands-on activities for youth and recruitment and community booths hosted by first responders and local organizations.

The event also featured live music, food trucks and family-friendly entertainment

“Douglas Day is more than a commemoration, it’s a living reminder of Santa Monica’s unique legacy as a place where innovation takes flight and community comes together,” said Ben Marcus, co-founder of Spirit of Santa Monica.

“It’s about honoring our heroes, inspiring the next generation, and celebrating the bold vision that has always defined our city.”
