October 30, 2025 -- Low-income children from across Los Angeles County came this month to the inaugural Youth Day at the Pier that for many was their first visit to the ocean.

The October 11 event, in partnership with the Hands and Hearts of Hope Foundation, gave 250 children complimentary rides on the classic carousel inside the historic Merry Go-Round Building and unlimited rides and games at Pacific Park.
The children were also treated to live entertainment, as well as what for many was their first live glimpse of an iconic coastline popularized in movies, television and video games.
“Seeing the wonder on these kids’ faces as they stepped onto the Pier for the first time reminds us exactly why we do what we do,” said Jim Harris, Executive Director and Historian of the Santa Monica Pier.
“As a nonprofit, our mission is to ensure the Pier remains a place where everyone can experience joy -- regardless of background or circumstance.”
Youth Day at the Pier, officials said, "reflects the Santa Monica Pier Corporation’s expanding community programming made possible through public donations and local partnerships."
The event was presented with the support of Pacific Park on the Santa Monica Pier, Starbucks, Costco and Kiwanis Santa Monica.
"Future Youth Day at the Pier events are already in planning stages, with the goal of expanding the number of participating children and partner organizations annually," event organizers said.
