Police Offer Holiday Safety Tips

By Jorge Casuso

November 26, 2025 -- As holiday shopping kicks into gear Friday, the Santa Monica Police Department is offering useful tips for residents to stay safe and protect their purchases.

In the midst of all the holiday bustle, the tips should "help keep your holidays joyful, stress-free, and focused on the things that truly matter to you."

At all times, police urge those out on the town to stay aware and not become distracted, which may not be so easy to do in crowded areas.

"Take a second to look up, stay alert, and keep track of your surroundings," police advise. "Well-lit streets and walkways are your friend, and a little situational awareness can go a long way toward keeping the season bright."

One of the perils of holiday shopping are pickpockets who "know people are carrying more, rushing more, and paying less attention."

One of the perils of holiday shopping are pickpockets who "know people are carrying more, rushing more, and paying less attention."

To help keep pickpockets at bay, "keep bags zipped and close to your front, not hanging loosely behind you and when dining or taking a break, keep your bag on your lap."

Avoid stashing phones or wallets in back pockets, and "be cautious if someone bumps into you, crowds you, or creates an unusual distraction -- these are common tactics during the holiday rush."

It is also important to safeguard your vehicle and any belongings you leave behind while shopping or dining.

Doors should always be locked and windows fully closed. Never leave shopping bags where they can be seen and, if possible, park under good lighting.

Gifts are not only snatched in public places; your doorstep can also attract "porch pirates" on the lookout for delivered packages.

To protect your gifts, have them shipped to a address with someone inside, track the packages and bring them inside promptly, police advise.

If the address is empty for a stretch of time, secure pickup options or consider a parcel lockbox or doorbell camera.

Those traveling should make it appear that someone is home by using timers for indoor lights "to mimic typical routines" and making sure all doors, windows and side gates are locked.

Travelers who want to post heir photos online should wait until they return, since "posting in real time can unintentionally signal that you’re away."

Those enjoying a drink at holiday gatherings should plan a safe ride home. They also should "keep an eye on friends, celebrate responsibly, and don’t hesitate to report anything that feels out of place."

police note that with a little awareness and preparation, "you can make the most of everything this time of year has to offer -- warm lights, good company, and peace of mind included."
