Take Part in the Gift of Giving

By Lookout Staff

November 19, 2025 -- There's still time to help bring joy and relief to Santa Monica College (SMC) students in need by donating this week to GIVING THANKS(giving), now in its 9th year.

The event organized by the Santa Monica College Foundation will distribute holiday groceries to more than 2,400 students on Monday and Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The event also raises critical funds to support SMC’s Basic Needs Program and its Emergency Grant Fund to support students throughout the year, Foundation officials said.

So far, the fundraising drive has received 166 donations totaling $226,151, just short of the $250,000 goal, according to the Foundation's website.

Through the Basic Needs Program, "all students have reliable access to free, fresh groceries, hygiene products, parenting supplies like diapers and formula, clothing, transportation, and mental health services."

The Emergency Grant Fund "provides crucial assistance during unexpected and urgent situations -- such as housing loss, medical bills, car repairs, or childcare needs -- allowing students to stay enrolled and focused on their education."

According to school officials, nearly two-thirds of SMC students are from low-income households and 52 percent of students surveyed "experience food insecurity."

“Many students, particularly those from low-income households, find themselves unable to afford regular, nutritious meals,” Dr. Lizzy Moore, SMC's Dean of Institutional Advancement, said during last year's event.

“We are immensely grateful to the donors whose generosity will help the SMC Foundation in eliminating barriers to food security during this holiday season.”

This year’s sponsors include Albertsons Companies Foundation, Mark and Freya Ivener, Layla Bagels & Coffee, Bari Lipp Foundation, Payden & Rygel, Recharge, Santa Monica Dermatology Group, Smart & Final Charitable Foundation, SMC Associated Students, SMC Emeritus College, Jacmar, Melissa’s Produce and Westside Food Bank.
