Ed Foundation Fundraiser Raises Nearly $400,000

By Lookout Staff

May 19, 2025 -- This month's tenth annual Wine Auction raised more than $388,000 to support essential staff and programs at local public schools, the Santa Monica Education Foundation announced Friday.

Hundreds of education supporters attended the sold-out event on May 4 hosted by the Fairmont Miramar Hotel & Bungalows under its iconic Moreton Bay Fig Tree.

Guests enjoyed gourmet wine and food tastings and a performance by the Samohi Chamber Orchestra, before moving into the Starlight Ballroom for a gourmet dinner, a live auction and a special performance by the Samohi Jazz Band.

For the first time in the auction's history, "an anonymous donor offered a $10,000 paddle raise match -- galvanizing the room and sparking a wave of generosity," Foundation officials said.

Santa Monica Fire Chief Matthew Hallock and two deputy chiefs received a standing ovation when they were honored as community heroes for their service and dedication during the devastating Palisades Fire.

“The evening was truly inspiring -- a powerful show of community and generosity that will directly benefit students and families across Santa Monica,” said Danny Guggenheim, president of the Foundation's board.

“We’re so grateful to our generous sponsors, dedicated volunteers, restaurant and winery partners, student performers, and every donor who made this night a success.”

To date, the decade long partnership between the Ed foundation and the Miramar has raised more than $2.7 million, with fundraising increasing dramatically after averaging about $275,000 during its first six years.

The money raised at the annual auctions supports arts programs, elementary classroom aides and STEM programs, as well as stretch grants for Santa Monica's 11 public schools.

“Our partnership with the Ed Foundation reflects our shared commitment to Santa Monica’s students,” said Simon Fricker, the Miramar's general manager. “We’re proud to support an event that unites our community in such a meaningful way.”

A second round of online auction bidding with new items and experiences will remain open through Friday at 12 p.m. at https://SMwine2025.givesmart.com.

Fundraising for the 2025-2026 school year continues through June 30. To learn more or make a gift, visit smedfoundation.org.
