Santa Monica Celebrates Make Music Day

By Lookout Staff

June 20, 2025 -- Santa Monica on Saturday will join more than 2,000 cities around the world in a unique music celebration that originated in France in 1982.

Five free outdoor concerts that invite "everyone to make and enjoy music together" will be held in Santa Monica parks during Make Music Day that celebrates the summer solstice.

"Completely different from a typical music festival, Make Music is open to anyone who wants to take part," according to the festival's website.

"Every kind of musician — young and old, amateur and professional, of every musical persuasion — pours onto streets, parks, plazas, and porches to share their music with friends, neighbors, and strangers."

Santa Monica, which has taken part in "this global music-making moment" since 2012, will hold concerts in the following venues:

  • Concert at Douglas Park -- Presented by Santa Monica Northeast Neighbors, from 10 a.m. to noon.

  • Concert at Norman Place and Main Street, within Main Street’s Annual Summer Soulstice Festival -- Presented by Ocean Park Association from noon to 5 p.m.

  • Concert in Reed Park -- Presented by Wilshire Montana Neighborhood Coalition from 1 to 5 p.m.

  • Concert in Colorado Center Park -- Presented by Santa Monica Mid City Neighbors 4 to 8 p.m.

  • Concert in Palisades Park (between Georgina & San Vicente) -- Presented by North of Montana Association 5 to 8 p.m.

"Whether you're joining a neighborhood concert, picking up an instrument for the first time, or tuning in online, Make Music Day invites everyone to take part in the joy of music," City officials said.

"National projects, free online lessons and global livestreams are just a few of the ways to participate."
