July 11, 2025 -- A homeless man has been charged in a sexual assault on the Santa Monica beach bike path in April, as well as in two other attacks that took place in Long Beach last week.
Alvin Marbra, 29 of Long Beach is charged with two forcible sex crimes and one hate crime and, if convicted, faces 25 years plus 55 years to life in state prison, the LA District Attorney said Thursday.
Long Beach police detectives believe that Marbra, who was convicted in 2021 of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in Florida, may have committed additional crimes.
The Santa Monica attack took place on April 4, when Marbra allegedly assaulted a 52-year-old woman on the Strand bike path on Santa Monica State Beach.
Marbra is charged with one felony count of assault "with the intent to commit a forcible rape with the special allegation that he inflicted great bodily injury during the commission of this crime," according to the DA.
The second incident took place on June 30, when Marbra allegedly attacked a 26-year-old man at around 11:30 p.m. near Orange Avenue and Fourth Street in Long Beach.
Marbra is charged with one felony count of battery "with the special allegation that the act was a hate crime," according to the DA.
Three hours later, at around 2:30 a.m. on July 1, Marbra allegedly raped a 61-year-old woman near Alamitos Avenue and Fifth Street in Long Beach.
According to Long Beach police, the victim was walking "when she was approached by Marbra, who physically assaulted her, causing her to lose consciousness and sexually assaulted her."
Detectives used security camera footage and were able to find the suspect later that afternoon at around 12:45 p.m. in the area of 4th Street and Cherry Avenue, where he was taken into custody, police said.
Marbra is charged with one felony count of forcible rape "with the special allegations that he kidnapped the victim and inflicted great bodily injury during the commission of this crime," according to the DA's office.
The defendant appeared in court last Thursday and bail was set at $1.275 million. Marbra remains in custody and is scheduled to be arraigned on July 17.
If convicted as charged, Marbra would be required to register as a sex offender for life and would be prohibited from possessing firearms, the DA's office said.
“The details of this series of attacks are incredibly disturbing," said District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman. "My office will pursue every legal avenue to hold the perpetrator fully accountable for these appalling acts."
The case is being prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Elyse Rendon of LADA’s Sex Crimes Division and is under investigation by the Long Beach Police Department.
Detectives believe there may be additional unreported incidents and encourage any possible victims to contact the Long Beach Police Department’s Sex Crimes Detail at (562) 570-7368.
