February 25, 2025 -- The Kiwanis Club of Santa Monica donated $100,000 to the local Salvation Army last Wednesday to aid relief efforts for the wildfires that burned across the LA region last month.
Another $100,000 check will be presented to the local Red Cross chapter at the Kiwanis Club's meeting next month.
Wednesday's donation will help the Salvation Army support those affected by the wildfires with financial assistance, emotional support, cleanup kits, air purifiers and food, said Salvation Army Captains James and Katrina Fleming.
“We are blessed to be able to help our community through the Salvation Army, an organization that consistently steps up for those in need,” said Kiwanis Club President Eula Fritz.
“We are proud to recognize their heroic efforts in providing relief to the communities devastated by the wildfires.”
The Palisades Fire scorched more than 23,000 acres and destroyed more than 10,000 structures in Pacific Palisades, Malibu and parts of the Santa Monica Mountains.
Hardest hit was Pacific Palisades, where the fire destroyed 6,662 structures, including homes where the owners had lived for generations, as well as the homes of numerous celebrities.
The Eaton Fire destroyed some 7,000 structures and consumed some 14,000 acres in Altadena and Pasadena.
More than 100,000 residents were ordered to evacuate, including those in Santa Monica who live north of San Vicente Boulevard, where a curfew was also imposed.
Kiwanis will present a second $100,000 donation to American Red Cross Executive Director Sean Inoue at the monthly Kiwanis lunch meeting on March 19.
“It is an honor to contribute to organizations like the Salvation Army and American Red Cross, whose tireless dedication and efforts continue to support our community in times of crisis,” said Abeer Sweis, Chair of Kiwanis Charities.
“Our goal is to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those who need it most.”
Established in 1922, the local Kiwanis Club contributes more than $120,000 a year to the children and families of Santa Monica and the Westside through scholarships, grants and enriching activities.
