Labor Day Weekend Brings Closures, Traffic Operations and a Water Quality Warning

By Lookout Staff

August 29, 2025 -- Labor Day weekend is expected to stay dry and mostly sunny as the Santa Monica prepares to celebrate the holiday by closing or scaling back hours at City facilities.

On Friday, the Police Department will crack down on dangerous driving with a bicycle and pedestrian safety operation from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., followed by a DUI Checkpoint from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. at an undisclosed location.

Temperatures over the weekend are expected to reach highs ranging from the 70s at the beaches to the 90s and low 100s inland.

Beachgoers are warned not to wade into the waters 100 yards north and south of the Pier due to high levels of bacteria common in the crowded area.

City Hall will be closed on Monday, bus routes will be cut back and there will be no trash pickup or street cleaning, City officials said.

Parking meters will not be enforced, except for those that are enforced daily according to posted signage.

In addition to City Hall, other facilities that will close include the Colorado Yards, the Office at Woodlawn Cemetery, The Transit Store and the City Yards Operation Center.

Also closing are the Santa Monica Public Library, the offices at Virginia Avenue Park and the Police Activities League (PAL) Youth Center.

The Tennis Office at Reed Park will be open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., while the Santa Monica Swim Center will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.. Meanwhile, the Annenberg Community Beach House pool will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Memorial Park Fitness Room and Gym, as well as The Cove Skatepark, will be open from noon to 5 p.m.

The Big Blue Bus (BBB) will operate on a weekend schedule, while Routes 5, 15, 16, 41, 44, and Rapid 10 will not be in service.
