January 26, 2024 -- Police arrested a homeless woman Friday morning for the fatal shooting of a 46-year-old resident of Los Angeles in Sunset Park Thursday.

Kayla Delise Mackie, 27, was arrested in West Los Angeles after Santa Monica police detectives "worked tirelessly throughout the day to identify and locate the suspect," police officials said.

The victim -- who was identified as William Edwards III -- "was transported to a local hospital in grave condition and died at the hospital," police said.

Officers responding to a call of shots fired received at 10:25 a.m. in the 2600 block of 29th Street found Edwards "seated in his parked vehicle," said Lt. Erka Aklufi, the Police Department spokesperson.

"Witnesses who saw the suspect leave the scene provided officers with her general direction of travel," Aklufi said.

According to KTLA, witnesses reported what "appeared to be some sort of argument between the suspect and the victim before shots were fired."

Kyle Kolhoff, a witness told the station that "the two people got into a scuffle."

“One took a shot at the other and possibly injured themselves," Kolhoff said. "They just basically went running around the neighborhood."

Another witness, Sunset Park resident Joe Nicoletti, told KTLA that “a Black female wearing a dark hoodie ran south into the business park and the helicopters were here.

“I don’t know how she would’ve gotten away,” Nicoletti said.

The motive for the crime is still being investigated, police said.

The Police Department will release Mackie’s booking photo in the coming days, Aklufi said.
