September 26, 2022 -- Shortly after 3 a.m. Saturday, a man rolled a garbage bin in front of Susu handbags on Main Street, smashed the front window and made off with more than $10,000 worth of merchandise.
The surveillance video -- aired by several local television newscasts -- shows the man tossing the stolen handbags into the bin, closing the lid and leisurely rolling it away.
The surveillance camera inside Susu's handbags at 2400 Mian Street was malfunctioning, but subsequent news footage showed large epty spaces on the store shelves.
Susu Zheng, who opened the store in December, said the thief stole more than 30 of the handbags she designs and manufactures.
The thief, she told NBC News, "took the most expensive bags and most nice, popular designs. It’s a lot of money and it’s devastating,” she said.
According to Susu's website, the handbags typically cost between $200 and $400 and include crossbody purses, clutches, backpacks, wristlets and shoulder bags.
The website showcases up and coming celebrities with the handbags, which are "influenced by her travels and the fashion scene of Los Angeles and the world."
The handbags are carried in nationwide in specialty boutiques and other retailers specializing in luxury leather handbags, according to the website.
"It's very difficult to build a business to this point. It's a lot of sacrifice," she told CBSLA.
"I came here to pursue my dreams," she said. "It's my dream, my passion, my hope and it's also my living to support my child."
The Santa Monica Police Department responded and took fingerprints, but has nor released a description of the suspect, according to reports.
