September 2, 2022 -- Two residents were displaced after their unit in a Mid City apartment building suffered "significant damage" during a fire Thursday night, Santa Monica Fire Department officials said Friday.

Firefighters received multiple 9-1-1 calls shortly before 10 p.m. reporting a structure fire in the 1400 block of 17th Street, said Fire Captain Patrick Nulty.

"Upon arrival, Firefighters found a well-developed fire within one apartment unit and began an aggressive suppression effort and a rapid search for any potentially trapped occupants," Nulty said.

"Fortunately, all residents were able to evacuate and there were no reported injuries."

Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze -- which began inside the a bedroom -- keeping the fire from spreading to adjacent apartments in the six unit building, Nulty said.

"Significant damage occurred to one apartment unit with only minor smoke damage to the unit above, forcing the displacement of two residents," Nulty said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, he said.

Santa Monica Fire was assisted by Santa Monica Police, Santa Monica Building & Safety and McCormick Ambulance.
