May 2, 2022 -- A major gas leak shut down a two-block stretch of the Promenade for four hours late Monday afternoon as Southern California Gas Company crews worked to repair the gas main break.

Crews from the Santa Monica Police and Fire departments blocked roads at the 200 block of Santa Monica Boulevard and the 1300 and 1400 blocks of the Promenade as businesses and residents were evacuated.

Hazardous materials teams were also at the scene, Fire Department officials said. No injuries were reported.

Officials estimated the area would be closed for five hours as SoCal Gas crews worked to repair the gas main break on the 200 block of Santa Monica Boulevard.

An update issued by the utility company said the leak was caused by a "third-party crew working in the 1400 block on Third Street Promenade."

Company officials said "a natural gas odor" would likely linger in the area "while crews continue to perform this work."

The Santa Monica Fire Department sent an alert via Twitter at 4:29 p.m.

At around 8:15 p.m., SMFD officials announced the leak had been repaired and service to the area restored.

Streets were reopened and the area was deemed "safe for residents and businesses to enter," the update said.
