March 7, 2022 -- A homeless man was in critical but stable condition Monday after being stabbed multiple times outside the Salvation Army in Santa Monica shortly after midnight.
Michael Montgomery Michael Montgomery, a 29-year-old homeless man, was arrested for the attack and charged with attempted murder and kidnapping, police said.

A witness told responding officers that he saw Montgomery "strike and stab the victim multiple times," said Lt. Rudy Flores, the Police Department spokesman.

"The witness yelled for Montgomery to stop," Flores said. "Montgomery then followed up by kicking the victim then dragged his body a short distance while he was down."

Officers dispatched to investigate the assault with a deadly weapon "responded quickly" and detained Montgomery in the area of 4th and Colorado, Flores said.

They recovered a folding knife in his possession, he said.

Officers found the victim in front of the Salvation Army building at 1533 4th Street "suffering from multiple stab wounds.

"Officers began to render first aid until Santa Monica Fire personnel arrived then transported the victim to a local hospital," Flores said.

Montgomery was taken to Santa Monica Jail, where he was booked on the two counts, according to police.

Anyone with additional information concerning the incident should call Detective George Burciaga at 310-458-8932 or the Watch Commander (24 hours) at 310-458-8426.
