August 18, 2022 -- Squad cars swarmed the Samohi campus on the first day of school Thursday after a fight broke out that led to one student being arrested and another hospitalized.
Officers were dispatched to the campus less than two blocks from the Public Safety Facility at 12:45 p.m. "for a fight involving multiple students," police said.
"Upon arrival, officers located one student with a facial laceration he suffered during the fight," said Lt. Rudy Flores, the Police Department spokesman.
"The student was transported to a local hospital for treatment of a non-life-threatening injury," Flores said.
According to Samohi Principal Marae Cruce the lacerations were "from an unknown sharp object."
The primary suspect, a juvenile student, "was last seen running off campus and was ultimately taken into custody by SMPD," Flores said.
No other injuries were reported, and the school remained open for classes with officers remaining at the scene, Flores said.
Cruce said the two students involved have been identified and school officials are "in communication with the parents of both students."
"The safety and security of our students and staff are our top priorities," Cruce said in a letter to parents, staff and students.
"We are taking this incident seriously and will provide you with an update when we have additional information," she wrote.
