August 1, 2022 -- A fatal stabbing Friday in courtyard of the Main Library involving two homeless men marked the first homicide in Santa Monica this year.

Quade Colbert

Quade Larry Colbert, 34, was arrested by Santa Monica police Sunday after an an around-the-clock search by patrol officers and detectives, police said.

The incident took place at around 7:18 Friday in the north courtyard of the Main Library at the corner of 6th Street and Santa Monica Boulevard.

"The victim was speaking with the suspect when he brandished a knife and stabbed the victim twice," police said.

The suspect fled before officers arrived, according to police. The victim succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Both victim and suspect are homeless.

The incident took place a little more than one year after another stabbing took place four blocks away ("Downtown Stabbing Marks Year's First Homicide," June 22, 2021).

In that incident, the suspect was arrested near the Main Library.

Anyone who has additional information concerning the incident should call Detective Nicole Murphy at 310-458-8941 or email Nicole.Murphy@santamonica.gov.

They can also call criminal Investigations at 310-458-8451, or the Watch Commander (24 hours) at 310-458-2249.
