The crews "found a 2 story multi-unit apartment building with fire in a unit on the first floor," said Santa Monica Fire Captain Patrick Nulty.
"Firefighters rapidly attacked the blaze while searching for occupants," Nulty said. "The occupants of the apartment escaped and were uninjured."
Due to a "quick response and aggressive suppression effort," the fire was contained to the single unit and the rest of the building was spared, he said.
The occupants of the fire unit, along with those in three adjoining apartment units were displaced overnight, Nulty said.
SMFD Investigators have determined the fire to be “unintentional” in nature, he said.
It took 27 Firefighters to extinguish the blaze, which resulted in no injuries to first responders, Nulty said.
Assisting agencies included Santa Monica Police, Santa Monica Building & Safety and McCormick Ambulance.
