November 16, 2021 -- Santa Monica residents can experience their city with the fresh eyes of a tourist by checking into a local hotel at discounted rates and exploring the world-renown beach destination.

“Santa Monica Extra Bedroom” offers residents -- as well as visiting family members and friends -- special rates at 25 of the city's hotels through February 6.

After checking in, hotel guests can explore Santa Monica's eight neighborhoods that offer unique shopping destinations including the Pier, Third Street Promenade, Montana Avenue, Main Street and Pico Boulevard.

Among the attractions are 400 restaurants with many offering al fresco dining experiences, open-air wellness events and activities and indoor attractions that include museums and art exhibits.

“Each year locals look forward to checking in to check out what our guests experience each day when they visit our city from world-class hotels and retail choices to Michelin star restaurants to award-winning beaches,” said Misti Kerns, President and CEO of Santa Monica Travel & Tourism (SMTT).

“The Extra Bedroom program is one of our most popular each year and provides residents with a respite in their own amazing seaside getaway," Kerns said.

To receive the discounted rates -- some up to $300 -- Santa Monica residents must show valid proof of ID and mention the program while making the reservation over the phone.

Rates are subject to availability and blackout dates may apply, SMTT officials said.

Those who mention the program at any of the three Santa Monica Visitor Information Centers will receive 30 percent off most Santa Monica merchandise that makes perfect holiday gifts:

Tourism officials encourage locals and visitors "to travel about the destination responsibly by familiarizing with current health orders, taking advantage of public and alternative modes of transportation and bringing their patience and good vibes to its beaches and local businesses."

They also encourage shopping local. For every $10 spent at a Santa Monica business, as much as $7 stays in the community through taxes, payroll and other expenditure, according to IndependentWeStand.

"Spending locally ensures that your sales taxes are reinvested right here in Santa Monica," SMTT officials said.
