November 4, 2021 -- Santa Monica will celebrate Veterans Day on the Pier Thursday with a swearing in-ceremony of future soldiers and remarks from an army general.

The celebration -- which will be streamed on the City's YouTube channel -- begins at 11 a.m. and a limited number of seats will be available, City officials said.

“It is our great fortune to have so many brave men and women in service to our country," said Mayor Sue Himmelrich. "They deserve our recognition all year with special honors paid on Veterans Day.

“We proudly join the U.S. Army in this tribute and ask the community to join us virtually to recognize and honor the veterans in our lives and across Santa Monica.”

The program includes a posting of the colors, the national anthem, remarks from he Mayor and from Councilmember Gleam Davis, remarks from General Curtis Taylor and the swearing-in ceremony.

Veterans Day commemorates the day the U.S. signed the armistice on November 11, 1918 that ended the fighting on land, sea and air in World War I.

More than 100,000 Americans died in what was called "the war to end all wars." Since then, the U.S. has fought in World War II and wars in Korea, Vietnam, Cambodia, Panama, the Gulf and Afghanistan.

“The past year and a half have been extremely challenging for our military veterans with the continued pandemic and the fallout from Afghanistan," said Sonki Hong, Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army.

"On this Veterans Day, we challenge you to help us make them feel extra special by showing gratitude and honor for their service.”

Santa Monica also has a Veterans Memorial in Palisades Park that for 21 years has paid tribute to the five branches of the military -- the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guards.

During the month of November, Santa Monicans are encouraged to visit the memorial.
