May 17, 2021 -- A convicted felon was arrested early Monday morning after walking into a convenience store with a gun holstered in his waistband, marking the fifth firearms arrest in Santa Monica in less than six weeks.

The incident took place shortly after officers responded to a call reporting an armed man accompanied by a woman had been seen entering the AM PM Market at 332 Pico Boulevard at around 1 a.m., police said.

"When officers arrived on scene, they witnessed two individuals matching the description of the involved subjects exit the store," said SMPD spokesman Lt. Rudy Flores.

"The individuals were safely detained outside of the establishment and officers were able to quickly disarm the male," Flores said.

The man was identified as Skyler Deon Darby, a 31-year-old Black male from San Bernardino.

"Darby had a .45 caliber handgun holstered inside his waistband," Flores said. "The female with Darby was interviewed and released."

Officers conducted a computer search and found that Darby is a convicted felon, Flores said.

He was arrested and booked for carrying a loaded firearm and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, police said.

Darby also was charged with possessing ammunition "when prohibited to possess," according to police.

Monday's incident marked the fifth arrest involving firearms since another convicted felon and his accomplice were arrested on April 8 for dealing drugs near the Pier ("Two New York Men Arrested in Drug Deal Near Pier," April 14, 2021).

On May 8, officers responding to two possible prowlers in a North of Montana neighborhood recovered a loaded firearm on the passenger in the getaway vehicle ("Police Make Weekend Arrests for Attempted Murder, Possession of Handgun," May 10, 2021)

Earlier this month, police made two separate arrests over a three-day stretch involving firearms ("Santa Monica Police Make Two Firearms Arrests," May 5, 2021)

One incident took place on May 2 in Ocean Park, the other on May 4 near the UCLA Santa Monica Medical Center.
