June 24, 2021 -- A 29-year-old felon was charged Tuesday with attempted murder after assaulting and firing a shot at a man during a confrontation on Main Street Sunday night.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office filed seven charges against Harold Dwayne Willis, including assault with a deadly weapon, four firearm charges and one charge for resisting arrest.

The incident took place Sunday at around 8 p.m. on the 1900 block Main Street, where officers responding to the reported shooting spoke with the victim.

The man said that he was walking with his stepson in the area when he saw Willis, whom he knew, said Police Department spokesman Lt. Rudy Flores. Willis followed him as they exchanged words.

"The victim was attempting to express his displeasure of Willis having any contact with his stepson when Willis retrieved a handgun from his waistband, Flores said.

Willis "struck the victim on the top of the head with it," then "pointed the firearm at the victim and fired one round at him," Flores said. "The victim was not struck."

The victim ran into nearby Star Liquor to seek help, while Willis fled eastbound on foot.

An officer spotted Willis at 3rd Street and Pico, but the suspect failed to comply to his commands and ran into El Texate Restaurant.

Officers quickly followed him inside and safely took him into custody, Flores said.

They recovered a loaded 9mm handgun on his person with one spent casing lodged in the chamber.

Willis faces charges of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, being a felon in possession of a firearm, unlawfully possessing a firearm, carrying a concealed unregistered firearm, carrying a loaded unregistered firearm and and resisting, delaying and obstructing arrest.

Anyone with information related to the incident should call Detective Nicole Murphy with the Criminal Investigations Division (CID) at (310) 458- 8941 or by email at
