June 16, 2021 -- More than 1,000 Santa Monica College (SMC) graduates are expected to take part in the school's first diploma drive-through celebration Saturday.

The one-of-a-kind celebration will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the SMC's Bundy Campus at 3171 S. Bundy Drive in Los Angeles with all COVID-19 safety protocols to be followed, school officials said.

The 2021 Commencement Ceremony featuring California State Treasurer Fiona Ma as the speaker will take place at 4 p.m. on Friday, June 25.

It is the second year in a row the ceremony will be held online "due to public health safety protocols regarding large-scale, in-person events during the COVID-19 pandemic," college officials said.

“We are delighted to be able to add an in-person component in the form of a diploma-drive thru event this year,” said SMC Superintendent/President Dr. Kathryn E. Jeffery.

“And we are equally delighted to have Treasurer Ma -- an inspirational leader and public servant who has shattered the glass ceiling -- to speak to the second cohort of SMC graduates to have persevered and succeeded in achieving their educational goals through one of the most difficult times in human history."

This year, 8,131 degrees and certificates will be awarded to 5,135 students, according to SMC officials.

A total of 4,306 Associate degrees will be awarded, including 1,474 Associate Degrees for Transfer and 27 Bachelor of Science in Interaction Design, SMC’s groundbreaking baccalaureate program.

The youngest nine graduates are 17 years old and graduate with an Associate degree, officials said. The oldest graduate is 94 and graduates with an Certificate of Achievement in Animation Foundation.

The graduating class is 62.5 percent female, 36.3 percent male and 1.2 percent unreported.

Keynote speaker Fiona Ma is California’s 34th State Treasurer and was elected in 2018 with more votes -- 7,825,587 -- than any other candidate for treasurer in the state’s history.

She is the first woman of color and the first woman Certified Public Accountant (CPA) elected to the position.

Families and friends from all over the world can go to to tune into the virtual ceremony.
