July 8, 2021 -- Police arrested a transient wielding two large knives as he chased a man across Lincoln Boulevard Saturday.

The arresting officer watched as cars slammed on their brakes and came to a complete stop in the middle of the intersection of Lincoln and Hill Street.

"The officer observed a male victim being chased by another subject across Lincoln Boulevard, swerving in and out of the stopped vehicles," said Sgt. Erika Aklufi.

"The male suspect was running with two large knives, one in each hand, still chasing the victim," she said.

The officer "immediately intervened" and ordered the suspect to drop the weapons, which he did, Aklufi said.

When taking the suspect into custody, the officer found a third knife in the suspect’s waistband.

The suspect, identified as Robert Smith, a 43-year-old homeless man, was transported to the Santa Monica Jail.

He was booked for assault with a deadly weapon, brandishing and carrying a concealed dirk or dagger and criminal threats.

The charges were filed by the City Attorney.

Anyone with additional information pertaining to the incident or suspect should call the Criminal Investigations Division at 310-458-8451 or the Santa Monica Police Department’s Watch Commander (24 hours) at 310-458-8427.
