July 1, 2021 -- The residents of a Santa Monica home awoke before dawn Wednesday to find a man yelling in their living room, according to police.

The woman and her juvenile daughter, who live in the 2900 block of Urban Avenue in the Pico Neighborhood, both called police at around 4:20 a.m. after they were awakened by a loud crashing noise, police said.

After seeing the suspect in the living room yelling, they "immediately locked themselves in their bedrooms and called police," said Lt. Rudy Flores, the Police Department spokesman.

Meanwhile, the suspect -- later identified as Joshua Absolom Hattam, a 49-year-old male from San Francisco -- walked through their home searching for unknown items, Flores said.

"When officers arrived on scene, they immediately established a perimeter around the residence and noticed one of the windows was smashed," he said.

They observed Hattam inside the residence, according to Flores.

"Officers were able to quickly take him into custody, while also checking the status of all the residents," Florres said.

Hattam was booked at the Santa Monica Jail for burglary.

Anyone with additional information pertaining to the incident or suspect should call the Criminal Investigations Division at 310-458-8451 or Santa Monica Department Watch Commander (24 hours) at 310-458-8427.
