May 15, 2020 -- A Santa Monica woman was arrested Tuesday for selling COVID-19 test kits that have not been approved by federal regulators, according to Los Angeles police.

Ying Lien Wang, 39, was arrested after LAPD, along with investigators from Homeland Security, served a search warrant near the 800 block of Broadway, police officials said.

Investigators conducted three undercover buys and surveilled Wang before arresting her on false advertising charges, authorities said.

Wang sold the kits on Craigslist, police said.

None of the 61 Covid-19 test kits recovered by authorities had been tested to meet U.S. safety standards and "could pose a risk to anyone using them," police said.

Wang faces additional charges for violating the Health and Safety Code.

Police officials note that Los Angeles, as well as Santa Monica, is offering free coronavirus testing.

The local tests -- which require an appointment -- are being offered at a walk-up facility that opened at Santa Monica College (SMC) last week ("Free Coronavirus Tests Offered at Santa Monica College," May 8, 2020).

Those with additional information about Wang's illegal operation should contact LAPD's Commercial Crimes Detectives at (213) 486-5940.

Those wishing to remain anonymous should call the LA Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (800-222-8477) or go directly to www.lacrimestoppers.org.
