Brew Works Pays Tribute to Bay Cities' Famous "Godmother" Sandwich
By Jorge Casuso
December 17, 2020 -- Bay Cities Italian Deli has become the toast of the town. Literally.
When beer lovers hoist the latest edition of Santa Monica Brew Works (SMBW) beers celebrating iconic local establishments, they'll get a hint of the toasty taste of the deli's famous bread.
That's because the loaves used to make Bay Cities' iconic "Godmother" sandwich have been added directly into the mash to make “The Godmother” Hazy IPA and “The Works” West Coast-Style IPA, which will debut Friday.
The "crackly, chewy" filone bread that’s handmade on-site at the deli's bakery "adds a slightly toasty character,” explains head brewer Drew Pomatti, a Santa Monica native and longtime Bay Cities aficionado.
“Just as a stellar sandwich relies on great bread to complement its toppings, a standout IPA needs a solid grain base to balance the abundance of hops,” Pomatti says.
Each beer features an identical blend of hops that "lends tropical and pine aromas with hints of white grape and black pepper," according to the brewery. "Both IPA’s clock in at 7.5% ABV."
Santa Monica’s only brewery is located just a mile from Bay Cities, which established in 1925 is one of Santa Monica's oldest family run businesses.
“Small businesses shape the character of a city,” says Hector Padilla, Bay Cities General Manager. “We admire the determination shown by our community -- especially in this challenging year.
"That’s why we’re thrilled to partner with our neighbors at Santa Monica Brew Works.”
“The Works” West Coast-Style IPA -- stacked with layers of Simcoe, Hallertau Blanc, Nelson Sauvin and Mosaic hops -- is a tribute to the deli's sandwiches loaded with veggies and vinaigrette.
“The Works” is the best way to experience a Bay Cities sandwich, Padilla says. “I always recommend ordering our subs fully dressed. Get it with ‘The Works’!”
Bay Cities’ wax paper sandwich wrapper inspired the beer label design, the brewery said.
Starting Friday, “The Godmother” Hazy IPA and “The Works” West Coast-Style IPA will be sold to-go from SMBW’s Tasting Room at 1920 Colorado Avenue. They will be available for a limited time in 16 oz cans in combo 4-packs.
