September 12, 2019 -- On Sunday, attendees at Santa Monica's COAST celebration will "bike, skate, scoot, run, walk and roll" along two miles of city streets that will be closed to traffic, City officials said.
The event -- which takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. -- features live music, food, art and "hands-on" activities including a kid’s bike skills rodeo, a giant puppet parade and salad-making at the community garden.
"COAST creates a car-free public space that allows the community to experience our streets as places for community and creativity, not just for cars," event organizers said.
"Whether painting a communal mural, jumping double-dutch or roller skating together at the pop-up rink, the route will be filled with all kinds of opportunities for participants to jump in and try out."
COAST showcases car-free ways to get around as participants show off their costumes, walking piece or "wheeled art creations" fashioned at home or during workshops leading up to the event.
They can enter the COAST contest to win prizes in six entry categories "around innovation, creativity, teamwork, and how people-powered it is," organizers said.
The lineup of musicians, dancers, and artists include Sol e Mar, Venice Beats, Mariachi Linda Mexicanas, Cuñao and the California Feet Warmers.
COAST will be held on two miles of city streets, including Ocean Avenue from Wilshire Boulevard to Colorado Avenue, Colorado from 5th Street to Ocean Avenue and Main Street from Colorado to Pier Avenue.
Santa Monica's Big Blue Buses will offer free rides across all routes the entire day of the event.
Bike rentals will be available at multiple locations along the route and at the 85 Breeze Bike Share stations located throughout the city.
Free bike valet will be provided at the Farmers Market at Ocean Park and Main Street. For more information about COAST click here
