Man Fatally Shoots Himself During Officer Involved Shooting, Police Say
By Jorge Casuso
October 21, 2019 -- A suspect fleeing police fatally shot himself during an officer involved shooting in Ocean Park late Sunday night, according to Santa Monica police.
The fatal confrontation took place on the beach shortly before midnight after police in the area of Bicknell and Ocean avenues heard two gunshots, police said.
Officers responded to the beach at Bay Street and were "directed to a male subject who had just shot into an occupied vehicle," said Lt. Candice Cobarrubias, the Police Department spokesperson.
The officers made contact with the suspect who failed to comply with commands and fled, running southwest onto the sand, Cobarrubias said.
"Officers engage in a foot pursuit when the suspect produces a handgun and an officer involved shooting occurred," she said.
A preliminary investigation indicated the suspect "suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound," Cobarrubias said.
He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
The victims inside the vehicle the suspect shot into were not struck by gunfire or injured, Cobarrubias said.
The investigation is ongoing.
The fatal incident was the third officer involved shooting in Santa Monica this year.
Last month, a suspected burglar was shot and wounded by Santa Monica police after he barricaded himself in a backyard in Sunset Park with a gun ("Suspected Burglar Hospitalized After Police-Involved Shooting," September 13, 2019).
Officers confronted the suspect, who failed to comply, and shot him in the abdomen, police said.
After the suspect continued to resist arrest, police deployed a K-9 and took the him into custody.
In July, a Santa Monica police officer shot and wounded a man who ran toward a group of officers responding to a reported disturbance ("Santa Monica Officer Shoots Man Resisting Arrest, According to Police," July 15, 2019).
The suspect was wounded by a shot that grazed his head, police said.
He was transported from the scene near 10th Street and Pacific Avenue to a local hospital and later released.
