By Lookout Staff November 18, 2019 -- A drunk hit-and-run driver killed an elderly woman crossing the street in Downtown Santa Monica shortly before 1 a.m. Sunday, police said. The pedestrian was in a marked crosswalk in the intersection of 5th and Arizona when the driver ran a red light at around 12:50 a.m., police said.
"A search of the area was conducted and the driver of the vehicle was located and detained," she said. The driver -- identified as Rogelio Bobadilla -- exhibited signs and symptoms of alcohol intoxication and was arrested. Bobadilla, 28, was transported to Santa Monica Jail and booked for driving under the influence of alcohol, hit and run, hit and run with injury or death and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. He is being held on $100,000 bail, Cobarrubias said. The Traffic Collision investigator will present the case to the Los Angeles District Attorney for filing, she said. Sunday's collision marks the second pedestrian fatality in Santa Monica this year. On January 15, a pedestrian was killed by a Metro train after being dragged from the platform at the Colorado & 17th street station ("Train Collision Marks First Pedestrian Death Since 2017," January 15, 2019). The incident marked the first pedestrian fatality in Santa Monica since 2017, when eight pedestrians were killed ("Eighth Pedestrian Killed This Year in Santa Monica," November 21, 2017). |
