Santa Monica Transient Sentenced for String of Sexual Assaults
By Jorge Casuso
June 6, 2019 -- A local transient who sexually assaulted four women in 2016, two of them in Santa Monica, was sentenced Wednesday to 32 years to life in state prison.
Pablo Carlos Pineda, 35, pleaded no contest on May 14 to two counts each of assault with intent to commit a sex crime, according to the the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
The second attack, on February 5, also took place on Santa Monica beach.
During the third attack in Beverly Hills on April 15, "the victim was beaten with a brick and suffered great bodily injury," according to the DA's office.
The final incident took place in West L.A. on July 2, when Pineda kidnapped a woman and sexually assaulted her, according to the DA.
“He threw her on the ground and got on top of her," LAPD Capt. Tina Nieto said at the time, according to a KTLA report. "This was a violent sexual assault.
"The victim tried to fight back, but the suspect punched her numerous times to quiet her, and then went on to sexually assault her,” Nieto said.
Santa Monica Police arrested Pineda in the MacArthur Park area on July 19, 2016 after forensic evidence and information gathered led to his identification as a suspect in the attacks.
Pineda's arrest was the result of "an extensive and collaborative" multi-agency taskforce investigation involving the Santa Monica, Beverly Hills and Los Angeles police departments and the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit, police said.
