April 1, 2015 -- “Circle of Transformation,” an award-winning drama about relationships among a group of community college students, debuts this weekend at Santa Monica College’s Theatre Arts Studio Stage.

Written by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Annie Baker, “Circle of Transformation” is set in window-less room of a creative dramatics class at a community college in the fictional town of Shirley, Vermont.

The play focuses on a group of students whose relationships evolve over the class’ six-week duration. Baker, whose major literary influences include Anton Chekhov, uses long moments of silence in the play as a dramatic effect. The playwright won a Pulitzer Prize in drama last year for her play “The Flick.”

Her plays have been produced by more than 100 regional theaters.

“Circle of Transformation” won an Obie Award for Best New American Play.

Presented by the SMC Theatre Arts Department, the play will be performed Friday, April 3 and April 10, and Saturday, April 4 and April 11, at 8 p.m.

Early performances will be on Sunday, April 5 and April 12, and Thursday, April 9, at 7 p.m.

Matinee performances are Saturday, April 4 and April 11, and Sunday, April 5 and April 12, at 2 p.m.

Tickets are $10 in advance, or $13 at the door. For tickets, call 310-434-4319, or visit  www.smc.edu/studiostage.

The Theatre Arts Studio Stage is on the SMC campus, 1900 Pico Blvd..
