March 18, 2013 -- Cool ocean breezes and overcast skies met the thousands of runners participating in the 28th annual Los Angeles Marathon as they finished up the race in Downtown Santa Monica.
Belarusian Aleksandra Duliba, 27, finished first in the women's race, clocking an unofficial time of 2:26 and winning $75,000. She was followed by 28-eight-year old Zemzem Ahmed, from Ethiopia, who finished in 2:30. Kenyan Erick Mose, 26, came first in the men's race in 2:09, followed by his compatriot Julius Keter, 24, who clocked 2:10.
Santa Monica resident Tami Reiss was among the top five finishers after she ran the race in 2:40.
For the second time in its history, the Marathon hit its capacity of 24,000 participants, who wound their way through 26 miles of Los Angeles streets, from Dodger Stadium to Santa Monica's Ocean Avenue.
This year, Meals on Wheels West, nonprofit based in Santa Monica that delivers meals to home-bound elderly people, fielded a team of 15 runners to support the organization.
The team has managed to raise $16,545 to support the nonprofit.
In 2011, CEO RoseMary Regalbuto and the Meals on Wheels West team managed to raise some $20,000 when they ran the marathon.
Albin Gielcz, president of NOMA and member of the Meals on Wheels West team, finished the 26.2 mile race in 3:33.
