March 12, 2013 -- March is Women's History Month and the Santa Monica League of Women Voters will celebrate four honorees at its sixth annual Women Who Shape Santa Monica event Thursday. The event, which starts at 7:00 p.m., will celebrate leading local women who have made impacts in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). “The event gives us an opportunity to recognize the impact that women have made on Santa Monica,” said Santa Monica League of Women Voters President Joanne Leavitt. This year, the League will honor architect Julie Eizenberg and City TV Manager Robin Gee. The League will also give a posthumous honor to former Will Rogers Elementary School Principal Irma Lyons for her work in bringing science and technology programs to the school. “Money or no money, she was going to transform that school,” said Leavitt of Lyons, who died in 2009 from cancer. Karen Carrey has the distinction of receiving the group's Cristobal Pankhurst Award for her work with the League and with her local Parent-Teacher Association. The Cristobal Pankhurst Award is named for the daughter of the radical British suffagette Emmeline Pankhurst. Cristobal, who is burried in Woodlawn Cemetery, fought alongside her mother and sisters for women's right to vote. “I've been working with the League of Women Voters of Santa Monica for the past 17 years,” said Gee. “As the manager of City TV, we've done local Santa Monica programming for every Santa Monica election.” “It's been a pleasure to work with a league chapter that is so committeed to getting people out to vote and to making sure that the voters are well-informed,” she said. Because this year's celebration is about achievements in math, science, technology and engineering, the League will celebrate on “Pi Day,” or March 14. “Pi Day” falls on March 14 because the numerical date is 3/14, or the first three digits of the number Pi written out. As a result, the League will be celebrating with actual pie. The event costs $20 in advance or $25 at the door. Reservations can be made by email at league@lwvsantamonica.org, by phone to 310-692-1494, or by Paypal at the League's website www.lwvsantamonica.org. Checks can be made to LWVSM and mailed to P.O. box 1265, Santa Monica 90406. |
