Suspect Charged in Fatal Santa Monica Car Accident Could Face Life in Prison

By Lookout Staff

October 2, 2012 -- Authorities have charged 26-year-old Cara Cameron with murder and drunk driving in connection with the death of an Australian tourist on August 21 in Downtown Santa Monica.

At a September 21 arraignment, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office added a count of second degree murder to the counts of vehicular manslaughter and drunk driving because of a conviction for a previous alcohol-related traffic collision on the Cameron's record.

If convicted, Cameron could face life imprisonment.

“For second degree murder, the sentence is 15 years to life,” said a spokesperson for the DA's office. “If she is convicted of gross vehicular manslaughter, she's looking at 4 years, 6 years or 10 years in state prison.”

“They are both alleged as serious felonies. It would not be a County jail,” the spokesperson said.

Cameron was taken into custody by Santa Monica Police as a suspect in the August 21 incident, which left 50-year-old Robert Mara with fatal injuries.

According to authorities, Mara was crossing Colorado Avenue at the 300 block with his family when he was struck by an eastbound car, driven by Cameron.

Mara, and his family, were crossing against a red “Don't Walk” signal.

“Following an investigation, Cameron was arrested for driving under the influence and vehicular manslaughter,” according to SMPD officials.

Cameron's preliminary hearing is scheduled for October 29 at Division 142 Airport Court.

Authorities are asking anyone with information related to the incident to contact Investigators Chris Dawson or Jason Olson at (310) 458-8954 or Sergeant Phillbo Rubish at (310) 458-8950.
