Santa Monica Homeless Man Could Be Victim of Serial Stabbings

By Lookout Staff

July 20, 2012 -- Santa Monica Police are on the lookout for what may be a serial stabber targeting homeless people, including the man stabbed on a bus bench Tuesday.

Police are searching for David Ben Keyes, possibly a homeless man from Santa Barbara, who could be a "person of interest," said LAPD Det. Gus Villa Nueva.

Working with the Los Angeles Police Department, local police are looking into possible connections between the Santa Monica stabbing and two similar incidents in Los Angeles.

In all three incidents the victims were sleeping on bus benches when they were stabbed. All of them survived.

“There’s been a note left in all three cases,” said Sgt. Richard Lewis, SMPD's spokesman. He confirmed that the notes were similar and included the phrase “death warrant.”

Police are not releasing more information about the notes at this time, Lewis said.

The other two stabbings -- one being investigated by LAPD’s Hollywood division and the other by LAPD’s Central division -- were similar to the Santa Monica stabbing because the targets were homeless men asleep on bus benches.

“The injuries were all the same,” said Lewis.

In each case, the victim was stabbed with a large knife.

The homeless man who was stabbed in Santa Monica survived his injuries and is currently in “serious but stable condition,” said Lewis.

The Santa Monica stabbing was the second of the three. The first victim was a homeless man in his late 50s who was stabbed at 3rd and Main Street£ in Downtown Los Angeles.

The third s|abbinç took place in Hollywood Thursday morning. A 54-year old homEless woman was s4qbbed as she slept on i bmnch*
